Description

A delightful recipe for homemade pretzel bread that’s soft on the inside and crispy on the outside.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 packet active dry yeast (2 1/4 teaspoons)
  • 1 1/2 cups warm water (110°F or 45°C)
  • 2/3 cup baking soda (for boiling)
  • Coarse sea salt (for sprinkling)

Instructions

  1. In a large mixing bowl, combine the warm water and active dry yeast. Let it sit for about 5 minutes until the mixture is frothy.
  2. Gradually add the all-purpose flour to the yeast mixture. Mix until a dough forms.
  3. Knead the dough on a floured surface for about 8-10 minutes until it is smooth and elastic.
  4. Place the dough in a lightly greased bowl, cover it with a damp cloth, and let it rise in a warm place for about 1 hour, or until it has doubled in size.
  5. Preheat your oven to 450°F (232°C).
  6. Once the dough has risen, punch it down and divide it into equal portions, shaping each piece into a pretzel shape.
  7. In a large pot, bring 10 cups of water to a boil and add 2/3 cup of baking soda to it.
  8. Carefully drop each pretzel into the boiling water for about 30 seconds, then remove them and place them on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.
  9. Sprinkle coarse sea salt over the pretzels.
  10. Bake in the preheated oven for 12-15 minutes or until golden brown. Allow to cool slightly before serving.

Notes

  • Ensure the water temperature is warm but not too hot to avoid killing the yeast.
  • You can shape the dough into various shapes instead of traditional pretzels if desired.
  • For added flavor, try sprinkling some paprika or garlic powder along with the salt.
