Description

Griddle-Style Philly Steak Sandwiches are a quick and flavorful meal you can make at home with thinly sliced beef, caramelized onions, and melted cheese on a crusty roll. This recipe is accessible; no specialized equipment needed, making it perfect for weeknights or casual gatherings.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 pound thinly sliced roast beef
  • 1 small onion, thinly sliced
  • 1 green bell pepper, sliced into thin strips
  • 1 (8 ounce) can sliced mushrooms, drained or 8 oz fresh mushrooms, sliced
  • 8 slices provolone cheese
  • 4 submarine rolls, split lengthwise
  • Salt to taste
  • Seasoned salt to taste
  • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil or butter for griddle

Instructions

  1. Prepare all ingredients. If using fresh mushrooms, clean and slice them now.
  2. Heat a large griddle or skillet over medium-high heat. Add 1 tablespoon of oil or butter.
  3. Add the sliced onions, bell peppers, and mushrooms. Season with salt and sauté until soft and caramelized, around 5-7 minutes. Transfer to a plate.
  4. Add the remaining oil to the griddle. Place beef in a single layer, season with salt and seasoned salt, and cook by chopping and turning it for even cooking until no longer pink, about 2-3 minutes.
  5. Return the vegetables to the griddle, mix with the beef, and divide into four equal portions.
  6. Place 2 slices of provolone cheese on each mound of the mixture, allowing it to melt. Cover briefly if needed to help melt the cheese.
  7. Open and warm the submarine rolls on the griddle. Use a spatula to place each portion into a roll and serve immediately.

Notes

  • Freeze the meat slightly before slicing to make it easier to achieve thin slices.
  • Cook quickly over high heat to keep the beef tender with browned edges.
  • Lightly toast the rolls to prevent sogginess from meat juices.
  • Place cheese on hot meat directly to ensure melting.
  • Cook in batches if necessary to prevent overcrowding and ensure proper browning.
