Description

Chicken Agrodolce is a classic Italian dish that combines tender chicken with a sweet and sour sauce made from balsamic vinegar, honey, and citrus. It’s a flavorful and sophisticated meal perfect for weeknight dinners or entertaining guests.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 large skinless, boneless chicken breast halves
  • ½ cup all-purpose flour (substitute rice flour for gluten-free option)
  • 1 ½ tablespoons olive oil
  • 3 cloves garlic, peeled
  • 1 teaspoon chopped fresh ginger
  • 4 bay leaves
  • ⅓ cup dry white wine (can substitute chicken broth)
  • ¼ cup balsamic vinegar
  • 2 tablespoons honey (or maple syrup)
  • ½ cup orange juice
  • ¼ cup lemon juice
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon ground black pepper
  • ½ teaspoon cayenne pepper (adjust to your heat preference)
  • 2 tablespoons toasted pine nuts (walnuts or almonds work too)

Instructions

  1. Place chicken breasts between sheets of plastic and pound to ½ inch thickness.
  2. Season flour with salt and pepper; dredge chicken and shake off excess.
  3. Heat olive oil in a skillet over medium-high heat, cook chicken 4-5 minutes each side, then tent with foil to keep warm.
  4. Reduce heat to medium, sauté garlic and ginger for 30 seconds, add bay leaves and deglaze with wine.
  5. Add balsamic vinegar, honey, orange juice, and lemon juice; bring to a simmer and season with salt, black pepper, and cayenne. Reduce sauce by one-third.
  6. Return chicken to pan, cover, and simmer on low for 8-10 minutes until cooked through.
  7. Sprinkle with toasted pine nuts before serving.

Notes

  • Use high-quality balsamic vinegar for the best depth of flavor.
  • Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days or freeze for up to 2 months.
  • Always use freshly squeezed orange and lemon juice for optimal flavor.
