Description
Hello, flavor enthusiasts! If you’ve ever reached for onion powder and found the store-bought version lacking in aroma and freshness, this recipe is for you. Today, we’re diving into the simple joy of making your very own homemade onion powder. Let’s add some magic to your spice rack!
Ingredients
- 4 large onions (yellow, red, or white)
- Optional: A few grains of uncooked rice to prevent moisture in storage
Instructions
Step 1: Prepare the Onions
- Peel the onions and grate them using a cheese grater for a finer texture. Alternatively, chop them finely using a food processor or knife.
Step 2: Drain the Onions 2. Place the grated onions in a fine mesh strainer over a bowl. Press with a spoon to extract the juice. Save the juice for other uses.
Step 3: Dry the Onions 3. Preheat your oven to 170°F. Line baking sheets with parchment paper, and spread the grated onions thinly across them. 4. Bake for approximately 5 hours or until completely dry. They should crumble easily when touched.
Step 4: Grind the Dried Onions 5. Once cooled, grind the dried onions using a food processor, mortar and pestle, or coffee grinder until they reach your desired powder consistency.
Step 5: Store the Powder 6. Store your homemade onion powder in an airtight container. Add a few grains of uncooked rice to absorb excess moisture.
